Updated: Oct 21, 2024

40% of the tech market is occupied by women worldwide. Similar trend could be observed in Asia, now countries like Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines,  Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand where the Tech industry is one of the leading the tech world and increasingly dictated by younger generations which is causing innovations and growth. Surprisingly and surpassing Europe women in tech in Asia industry is bigger than the one in Europe where only 25% of the technology and engineering positions are overtaken by women. Possible factors is historically distribution of female roles across other working divisions such as teachers, education, customer service, beauty, dental and medical solutions as well as pay differences.

The main roles that Asia women represent are software developers, product desigers and management roles. Less work in engineering. Senior tech roles such as CIO, CTO, and CISO are also included. Senior roles ratio between men and women remains 80:20. Between 26 and 50% of all female university graduates, are studying technology science with the highest ratio seen in Philippines and Indonesia.

There are several companies that beat the average statistics of female employees in Asia. One of them is Amazon. Further - LG Electronics and Alibaba where women represent 50% of the leadership roles. Impressive to note is the fact that JD which is leading in e-commerce technology industry and is a leading competitor to Alibaba has a woman CEO - Sandy Ran Xu. She was announced as a CEO in 2023 and the year following , JD showed total revenue of $ 130 billion, increase of 2.8% which is 2% more than the previous year.

The Fem-Tech industry in Asia is leading the global average, explained by the tech driven education with Singapore being the emerging hub for talented young people which will open opportunities for more career opportunities in the coming years. During the Asia women in tech industry awards, Singapore women led roles has received more than 90% , empower the next generation of female tech leaders.

In my personal experience, women who has touched the world of STEM education, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, are among the brightest in my female circle of friends and colleagues. The STEM world is facing unprecedented growth worldwide due to vast popularisation of internet and technology and data driven science, the demand for new talented individuals is increasing. In STEM, career opportunities are vast and varied, extending from software, web and multimedia developers to data scientists. Though overtaking a tech role, women have the potential and the power to lay the ground for future advancements in the sector.
